What are the proper size cake pans for making a three tier cake?

 I wish for a three-tiered cake for a 30th anniversary cocktail joint of two close friends. Although they are men, I think to go round with layers. What size pots (diameter and depth) would I need to make a cake visually proportionate?

 I dream it seems best when the levels are the same size dissimilarity because they grow larger.

For example, 6 ", 9" and 12 ". Each level is growing by 3 inches and will look exquisite and proportionate.
