Re "Hypocrites in the Statehouse" (in this corner, by Robert Speer, July 21):

End of grant programs will not solve the problems of our food system. Rather, we need to organize their work better for small farmers and medium enterprises.

Farm programs were created as a drizzle of coverage for farmers to blunt the effects of price changes and uncontrollable wild bear against the models. It is a misconception that these payments are the main reason U.S. farmers to become much more pleasant to mature agricultural commodities.Farmers plant these crops because they are requisitioned by the largest buyers, companies like Cargill and Archer Daniels Midland. Payments to farmers add these buyers to pay less for crops as their true values.

If markets were fair, farmers are not the misery of the safety net and the place would have paid a fair price for their products. Robert Speer is to counter the current structure that allows well-being of societies, but it's not going to the farmer, it goes straight into the pockets of multinational corporations.
