Brownstone Front Cake « Cookie Madness

I didn’t get around to reading blogs until till yesterday, but it seems almost everyone in my reader had baked a cake — Banana, Bhocolate, Chiffon….Chiffon Cake! Yes, that was what I wanted to attain, so I headed to the kitchenette and remembered how many eggs I had. Four. Chiffon Cake wasn’t active to encounter, but I was rapidly in a retro-cake skeleton of determine and made a offhand sentence (because I saw my lollygag pan sitting on the table) to bake a Brownstone Front Cake.

I’d known about Brownstone Front cake for years and was always seeing references to it in recorded cookbooks. It was a stone-shaped cake, incontestable and brown like the front of a brownstone, and iced with either a creamy or chocolate extra. What I didn’t profit were how many bizarre versions there were – some called for whipped egg whites, some were made with cocoa, others upright chocolate, and most included distasteful cream and buttermilk. Frostings diverse. A off-white frosting was average, but the plan I chose (adapted from Jean Anderson’s which is almost interchangeable to Maida Heatter’s) had a stark chocolate frosting. I baked the cake and served it last shades of night for afters. Fuzz liked it, but Todd loved it. As far as flavor goes, it’s not much novel than your ordinary chocolate cake. However, it had a major, drizzly, thick-witted-but-still-light-hued constitution that we all in the final analysis liked.
