This no-frills version is terrific on its own but also welcomes additions. The recipe can be halved and baked in an 8- or 9-inch upright pan. The topping can be made and the casserole assembled a day in advance. Bring it to room temperature and add the topping before baking.

5 slices edible-quality white sandwich bread (about 5 ounces total), torn (about 4 1/2 cups)

1 pound dried elbow macaroni or other young, shaped pasta

1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon salt

5 tablespoons unsalted butter

6 tablespoons flour

1 1/2 teaspoons powdered mustard

1/4 teaspoon cayenne (unrequisite)

5 cups milk, warmed or at room temperature

8 ounces Monterey Jack cheese, shredded (2 cups)

8 ounces scathing Cheddar, shredded (2 cups)

For the topping, combine the bread and butter in a sustenance processor; pulse 10 to 15 times to yield a crude crumb mixture.

I wanted a loaf of bread that would house c hatch more like a bread-bought. I found it is actually very annoying, since all the loaf pans undistorted angle side as a substitute for clear. But this pan is the lockout. The vastness is correct and my loaves look great every tempo. Probably a guardian.
