Tree Planting Ceremony Kicks Off Innovative Partnership

An innovative partnership has been formed between the Nebraska Subdivision of Correctional Services (NDCS) and the Nebraska Forest Service to plant fruit and nut trees at the Lincoln Correctional Center (LCC).

These efforts were made tenable through a grant received from the Alliance for Community Trees and their Peoples Garden Concession Program. Additional partners in the project are the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum, Inc., the Nebraska Forest Service and the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

A tree planting decorum will take place Friday, May 18, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. on a plot of land draw near the Lincoln Correctional Center at SW 27th and West Van Dorn.

The project will start with almost 50 trees to be planted this summer and fall with the potential to amplify to three times that over the next few years. It will take about five years before the trees are able to produce fruit and nuts.

Community guardianship inmates will assist by caring for the trees year to year. NDCS Cicerone Bob Houston said, “I am pleased to partner with UNL in this endeavor which will anticipate additional jobs and skills to inmates who are returning to Nebraska communities as well as untrained fruits and nuts to the inmate population at LCC.

Senators Call Out Russia on Poultry Imports

Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-CA) Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee Ranking Fellow and Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), supported by the Russian Ministry for moving their shared commitment to open markets to imports of U.S. poultry USA. Presidents Dmitry Medvedev and Barack Obama announced in June that the two countries had shown an agreement to end a deadlock five big month that began when Russia said it would no longer be resigned to the poultry with chlorine, a chemical by many elders in the United States as a response to food protection."Elimination of Russia to resume use of poultry with the United States reflects a serious lack of commitment to harmony achieved by the two countries in June," Lincoln said in a statement released yesterday. "By creating a bar barter irrational, Russia continues to move forward in US-Russian relations tankards....
